Frame-by-Frame Analysis of the Navy's Three Confirmed UAP Releases
INTRODUCTION
In 2017, three short videos captured by U.S. Navy pilots entered public consciousness and permanently changed the institutional conversation about UAP. The clips — known as FLIR1 (Tic-Tac), Gimbal, and GoFast — were the first officially confirmed military recordings of encounters with objects the Navy could not identify. Understanding what these videos actually show, and what they do not, requires careful frame-by-frame analysis.
FLIR1: THE TIC-TAC ENCOUNTER
The FLIR1 video was recorded off the coast of San Diego in November 2004, during a USS Nimitz carrier strike group exercise. The object — described by pilots as white, oval, and roughly the size of an F-18 — was tracked by shipboard radar for two weeks before the visual encounter. Commander David Fravor observed it hovering near the ocean surface before it accelerated toward his aircraft and then out of sensor range in under a second.
The video itself is brief and low-resolution. What makes the Tic-Tac case significant is not the footage alone but its corroboration across multiple sensor systems simultaneously: airborne radar, shipboard radar, and an ATFLIR infrared pod. Multi-sensor corroboration is rare in UAP cases and significantly raises the evidentiary baseline.
GIMBAL: THE ROTATING OBJECT
Recorded over the Atlantic Ocean in January 2015, the Gimbal video shows an object that appears to rotate smoothly while moving against apparent wind direction. The rotation is visible as a steady axial movement in the infrared image. The object is accompanied by several smaller objects in loose formation.
Aerospace engineers have debated whether the rotation is a real physical property of the object or an optical artifact produced by the FLIR camera's gimbal mechanism — hence the name. If the rotation is real, it has no known aerodynamic explanation. If it is a camera artifact, the video still documents an unidentified object of unknown origin. Neither conclusion is currently verified.
GOFAST: SPEED AND PARALLAX
The GoFast clip, also from 2015, shows an object tracked by an ATFLIR infrared pod moving rapidly over the ocean surface. The pilot's audio capture — "Oh my gosh" — reflects genuine surprise. The video became the most-analyzed of the three because of a straightforward question: how fast is it actually going?
Analysis published by independent researchers, including physicists who examined the targeting data, suggests the object's apparent speed may be significantly lower than it appears once the aircraft's own velocity, altitude, and camera angle are factored in using basic parallax geometry. If correct, GoFast may be the most conventionally explicable of the three — though it remains officially unexplained.
WHAT IS AGREED ACROSS ANALYSES
Several aspects of these three videos are agreed upon across the widest range of analysts, including skeptics:
- All three were officially released and authenticated by the U.S. Department of Defense
- The pilots who made the observations were experienced Naval Aviators, not casual witnesses
- The objects were tracked on multiple sensor systems, not seen visually alone
- None of the objects matched known aircraft, drones, or natural atmospheric phenomena at the time of observation
SKEPTICAL EXPLANATIONS
Skeptical researchers have offered specific conventional explanations for each video. For Tic-Tac: a distant aircraft whose range and speed were miscalculated due to sensor limitations. For Gimbal: a distant jet with engine exhaust producing an infrared signature, with apparent rotation caused by the FLIR optical system. For GoFast: an object moving at conventional speeds appearing faster due to parallax from the high-altitude tracking aircraft.
These explanations are not universally accepted — particularly for Tic-Tac, where multi-sensor corroboration complicates conventional dismissal. But they demonstrate the necessary investigative principle: extraordinary interpretation requires first eliminating ordinary causes. That work is ongoing.
WHY THESE VIDEOS MATTER
The significance of these three clips is not primarily in what they show — all three are brief, low-resolution, and ambiguous when viewed in isolation. Their significance lies in their official provenance. For the first time in the modern era, the U.S. military publicly confirmed the existence of encounters with objects it could not identify or explain.
This institutional acknowledgment opened the door to formal investigation through AARO, prompted bipartisan congressional action on UAP transparency legislation, and shifted the public conversation from fringe speculation to national security discourse. The tapes did not answer the question of what UAP are — but they established that the question was real.
CONCLUSION
The Tic-Tac, Gimbal, and GoFast videos are best understood as documented encounters requiring explanation, not as proof of any specific origin. Each has been analyzed extensively; none has been conclusively explained. Each retains anomalous characteristics that conventional explanations have not fully accounted for.
What these tapes established is a new evidentiary baseline: the U.S. government has recorded encounters with objects whose behavior it cannot currently explain using known physics or technology. What those objects are — foreign, natural, or otherwise — is precisely what formal investigation is now tasked with determining.
