What Would Interstellar Travel Actually Require?
Energy Requirements
Accelerating a 1,000 kg spacecraft to 10% the speed of light would require approximately 5 × 10²¹ joules of energy — equivalent to the entire global energy output for roughly 100,000 years. At 90% c, the energy requirements increase by orders of magnitude.
The Speed of Light Barrier
Einstein's Special Relativity establishes that no object with mass can reach the speed of light. As velocity approaches c, the energy required to accelerate further increases toward infinity. This is not a technological limitation but a fundamental feature of spacetime.
Interstellar Hazards
Even a particle of dust becomes lethal shrapnel at relativistic speeds. A grain of sand at 0.99c carries the energy of a small nuclear device. Any interstellar craft would require extraordinary shielding — itself adding mass and energy requirements.
Communication Delay
Even if an advanced civilization at Zeta Reticuli (39 ly) sent a signal today, we would not receive it until 2065. Our reply would arrive in 2104. Meaningful two-way conversation would span human generations. The distances of space impose communication delays physics cannot circumvent.

Laser Sail Propulsion
Breakthrough Starshot Initiative
Earth-based lasers push a gram-scale light sail to ~20% the speed of light. The Breakthrough Starshot project (backed by Yuri Milner and Stephen Hawking) actively researches this. A probe to Proxima Centauri would arrive in ~20 years. The challenge: scale, pointing accuracy, and protecting the sail from interstellar dust.
Alcubierre Warp Drive
Spacetime Geometry Manipulation
Physicist Miguel Alcubierre (1994) described a metric that contracts space ahead of a ship and expands it behind — allowing effective superluminal transit without locally exceeding c. The problem: it requires "exotic matter" with negative energy density, which may not exist in sufficient quantities, and would violate causality.
Wormhole Transit
Einstein-Rosen Bridges
General relativity permits solutions where spacetime folds, connecting distant regions through a tunnel. Traversable wormholes would require exotic matter to remain stable. No wormhole has ever been observed. The Hawking-Perry-Strominger theoretical work suggests microscopic quantum wormholes may exist, but nothing at the scale required for transport.
Generation Ships
Multi-Generational Voyage
A closed-ecosystem vessel at sub-light speed — requiring multiple generations to complete the journey. No propulsion breakthrough required, just extraordinary engineering. A journey to Zeta Reticuli at 0.1% c would take ~39,000 years — approximately 1,300 generations. Genetic diversity, psychological stability, and civilization continuity over such timescales are major challenges.

How to Interpret Claimed Origins
Myth-Building & Pattern-Seeking
Humans naturally project meaning onto stars. The same constellations appear across unrelated cultures. Claimed origins may reflect psychological phenomena, misidentification, or deliberate mythology — not literal star systems of origin.
Genuinely Unknown
Some UAP remain unexplained by known physics. The honest scientific position is that we do not yet have enough data. Whether origin claims reflect real phenomena awaits rigorous, properly funded study — neither confirmed nor dismissed.
Physics We Haven't Discovered
Physics as we understand it makes interstellar travel extraordinarily difficult. But our understanding is incomplete — quantum gravity, dark energy, and the nature of spacetime remain open. An advanced civilization may operate on principles unknown to current science.
