The word change matters: it signals that these are being treated as legitimate intelligence and national security concerns, not fringe curiosities.
Why are people talking about this more now?
In 2017, the New York Times published a front-page story revealing a secret Pentagon UAP program. In 2020, the Department of Defense officially released three Navy videos — the Tic-Tac, Gimbal, and GoFast — confirming them as unexplained. In 2023, a senior intelligence official testified to Congress under oath that the U.S. government possesses non-human craft. Whether that testimony is accurate is contested — but the conversation has fundamentally shifted.
What is actually confirmed vs unexplained?

BALANCED PERSPECTIVES
What Do People Actually Believe?
There is no single consensus. Here are the four main positions — each held by thoughtful people with different interpretations of the same evidence.
Natural or Human-Made
Many sightings are explained by atmospheric phenomena, experimental aircraft, drones, weather balloons, satellites, or sensor error. Most reports investigated by AARO and Project Blue Book fell into this category.
Genuinely Unresolved
A significant minority of well-documented cases remain unexplained after rigorous analysis. These typically involve multiple credible witnesses, radar confirmation, physical effects, or official video evidence.
Non-Human Intelligence
Some researchers, including former intelligence officials and pilots, argue that a subset of UAP represent technology not made by humans. No government has officially confirmed this. It remains a hypothesis — held by serious people.
Unknown Unknowns
The honest scientific position is that some UAP may represent phenomena we do not yet understand — not because they are necessarily alien, but because our current frameworks are incomplete. Science thrives on this kind of uncertainty.
